Their reputation for ear-splitting punk laden pop has grown by gradual increments from its beginnings in small town Brighton, garnering an impressive fan base and earning them opportunities to tour Europe and Japan, from where they recently returned to home shores. Curled in a dressing room in Cambridge, dressed in black, Laura-Mary Carter smiles shyly behind a mass of tangled dark hair. I definitely miss friends and family because we pretty much never see them. For a moment the exhaustion of constant touring seems to get the better of Laura-Mary. Her partner in crime, the handsome Steven Ansell, sits listening, propped up on the sideboard in the dressing room. There is a steely confidence about Steven, he is almost reluctant to answer questions but eloquent and smart when he chooses to be.

Blood Red Shoes are an alternative rock duo from Brighton, England. They have released two full-length albums, Box of Secrets and Fire Like This , plus a slew of early singles on limited 7″ vinyl pressings. The band frequently distance themselves from current English guitar music and consider themselves to be a punk band, in ethos and attitude, if not in their immediate musical style. Blood Red Shoes deal with themes of frustration, anger, alienation, boredom, doubt, psychosis, confusion, escape and ultimately the hope of freedom or change, in their lyrics.
The band openly support anti-fascist campaigns such as Love Music Hate Racism ,  contributing on the second CD of the LMHR compilation album with the track “Can’t Find the Door”,  and have also played the feminist festival Ladyfest in the past. Laura-Mary Carter (vocals, guitar) and Steven Ansell (drums, vocals) got Ahead of the album’s release, DiS invited Steven and Laura-Mary to run us through its tracks, one by one. Says Steven: We wrote this about a year and a half ago now it They play live as follows (further dates on MySpace).
We really wanted to focus on writing great songs and once we had the backbone of that we could embellish things in whatever way we felt fit. That way behind all the guitar distortion and heavy drums you could play the songs on an acoustic guitar and they could still stand up on their own. So, for example, if we felt like strings or keyboard would work in a song then we should put it in.
Which we did. We still like to keep our sound real and not too over-produced, but we did put more layers on than the previous albums, though each part really has a place. Our voices have been a huge step forward for us as we are really learning every day about how to sing better and how our voices complement each other. AM: Given you have more layers and production going on this time — how will it translate live?
LMC: Like I said, the backbone of each song is there without the production, so it will be a more stripped back version live. We will not be using backing tracks or have extra members, which is something we feel very strongly about. At the moment we are rehearsing the songs, and although there is a lot more to think about for both of us, I think there are ways we can work it out. A few songs on the record may not fit in our live set but we can play them acoustic for sessions and various other things.
I have way more pedals now and Steve has to take singing and drumming to the next level, but we are confident we can pull it off. AM: Have you always wanted to experiment more with your sound? Why start to impose fewer restrictions on yourselves now?
